Microchip "AVRCore" fork

Microchip released their own fork of DxCore today: https://www.microchip.com/en-us/development-tool/AVRCore

Is there actually any reason to use this over upstream? It seems to just remove functionality. Are they at least contributing back at all?

AFAICT, the Microchip core is set up to explicitly support several of their own "Curiosity Nano" boards, and nothing else.
(The curiosity boards are not "explicitly" supported by DxCore.)
It'll be interesting to see what they do for AVR-DU: current DU USB examples are based on the microchip tools and software framework(s), which AFAIK aren't compatible with Arduino (as well as being "quite large.")
