Request: list by family

At the moment I could really use an option for "list the loaded module (if any) of family X".

Hi @VictorEijkhout, thanks for the feature request. I want to clarify your use case:

Are you looking for a command to query which currently loaded module belongs to a specific family? For example:

$ module list --family compiler
gcc/7.1.0

Or are you looking to search the module hierarchy to find all modules that declare a particular family, regardless of whether they're loaded?

Based on your wording "list the loaded module (if any)", I believe you want the first option - to query the currently loaded modules by family. Is that correct?

Indeed, list currently loaded. Your proposed syntax would work.

And while you're indulging me, could I have module list --family none to list the modules that are not in any family?

Please note that Lmod sets the following env. vars. automatically. For example if gcc/13.2 with the family("compiler") function call in the module then:

% env | grep LMOD_FAMILY_COMPILER   
LMOD_FAMILY_COMPILER=gcc
LMOD_FAMILY_COMPILER_VERSION=13.3.0

are set.

In generally Lmod sets LMOD_FAMILY_<family> and LMOD_FAMILY_<family>_VERSION. This feature is very old. It was added about the time that the family() function was added.
