Summary:
NetPass causes a reproducible Arm11 data abort on my New 3DS XL when the generated NS patch 0004013000008002.ips is present. The crash happens when opening top-bar shell/app functions like Friends, Messages, and Miiverse. If I remove only 0004013000008002.ips, the crash stops.
Console / environment:
- Console: New Nintendo 3DS XL
- Region: original region, never region-changed
- boot9strap installed
- Latest Luma3DS
- Latest official 3DS firmware
- Latest NetPass version
- Pretendo/Nimbus installed and updated
Problem:
After installing NetPass patches, the system crashes only when I open top-bar items such as:
- Friends
- Messages
- Miiverse
The system does not seem to randomly crash during normal idle HOME Menu use.
If I delete only this file:
sd:/luma/sysmodules/0004013000008002.ips
then the crash no longer happens.
Crash details:
- Processor: Arm11 (core 1)
- Exception type: data abort
- Fault status: Translation - Section
- Current process:
ns (0004013000008002)
- Access type: Read
- FAR:
00000116
What I tested:
- Verified everything is up to date
- latest Luma 13.3.3
- latest system firmware 11.17.0-50U
- latest boot9strap 1.4
- latest NetPass 2.0.0
- latest Pretendo/Nimbus 2.1.0
- Used NetPass’s proper patch removal/reinstall flow
- removed patches through NetPass
- rebooted
- reapplied patches
- same crash
- Tested with Pretendo integration OFF in NetPass
- Tested with Nimbus switched to Nintendo mode instead of Pretendo
- Fresh sysmodules test
- renamed
sd:/luma/sysmodules to backup
- created a fresh new
sd:/luma/sysmodules
- installed only NetPass patches
- NetPass generated:
0004013000002602.ips
0004013000002F02.ips
0004013000003402.ips
0004013000008002.ips
- crash still happens
- 8002-only isolation test
- removed all other NetPass IPS files
- left only
0004013000008002.ips
- crash still happens
This is the key repro:
0004013000008002.ips alone is sufficient to trigger the crash.
- Disabled Luma game patching
- left external FIRMs/sysmodules enabled so
8002.ips would still load
- crash still happens
- Renamed/removed other Luma patch locations
- renamed
sd:/luma/titles
- renamed
sd:/luma/plugins
- crash still happens
- Theme / HOME Menu tests
- switched to default stock theme
- crash still happens
- renamed USA theme extdata
000002cd to 000002cd_backup
- crash still happens
- renamed USA HOME Menu extdata
0000008f to 0000008f_backup
- crash still happens
- New 3DS CPU / L2 / core2 tests
- tested with normal clock
- tested with L2 disabled
- tested with core2 redirect off
- crash still happens
- SD card confidence
- high-quality SanDisk Extreme 128GB
- FAT32, proper cluster size
- behavior is extremely specific to
0004013000008002.ips
Expected behavior:
NetPass patches should not cause an ns crash when opening Friends / Messages / Miiverse / other top-bar functions.
Actual behavior:
With 0004013000008002.ips present, opening those functions causes an Arm11 data abort in ns.
With that file removed, the crash stops.
What seems ruled out:
- old title patches
- game patching / LayeredFS
- Luma plugins
- theme selection
- theme extdata
- HOME Menu extra data
- Pretendo integration
- Nintendo vs Pretendo mode
- New 3DS clock/L2/core2 settings
- leftover sysmodules
Current workaround:
Remove 0004013000008002.ips. The other NetPass patches can remain.
Question / suspected cause:
This looks like either:
- a bug or edge case in the generated NS patch
0004013000008002.ips, or
- a console-specific system-state issue that the NS patch triggers
If helpful, I can provide:
- crash screen photo
- screenshots of the generated sysmodule files
- file size / hash of my
