Codex Safety Net

Codex Safety Net is an unofficial Windows tray and macOS menu bar app that protects earned Codex limit reset credits from expiring unused

It launches quietly at login, checks the local Codex installation, and redeems an eligible reset shortly before it expires

What it does

  • Uses Codex's account/rateLimits/read response for exact credit IDs and expiration times
  • Redeems the exact credit through account/rateLimitResetCredit/consume
  • Defaults to acting 15 minutes before expiry
  • Avoids spending a reset when unused quota will naturally reset before the credit expires
  • Starts at login and performs network work only during brief checks
  • Includes Permanently uninstall…, which removes startup app registration, local settings, and the app after confirmation
  • Codex Safety Net talks to the official local codex app-server process. It never reads or stores your access token

Install

Download the archive for your platform from GitHub Releases.

Windows

  1. Extract CodexSafetyNet-Windows-x64.zip.
  2. Run it, the Codex badge appears under the taskbar's hidden icons arrow.

macOS

  1. Extract CodexSafetyNet-macOS-universal.zip.
  2. Move Codex Safety Net.app to /Applications.
  3. Open it once, the Codex badge appears in the menu bar

These are unsigned community builds, so Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper may ask for confirmation.

Tray controls

  • Auto use expiring resets — master switch
  • Auto use before expiry — choose the auto use window
  • Individual resets — choose any reset that shouldn't be auto used
  • Refresh now — fetches a new account snapshot

On macOS, uninstall moves the app bundle to Trash so it remains recoverable until Trash is emptied. On Windows, the running executable schedules its own deletion after it exits
