### Troubleshooting installer downloads and shell initialization

If the installer does not download, does not start, or leaves `conda` and
`mamba` unavailable in a new terminal, check the following before opening a
bug report:

1. **Confirm that the downloaded file matches your platform.** On Unix-like
systems, `uname` and `uname -m` should select one of the file names listed
in the installer table above. On Apple Silicon, use the `MacOSX-arm64`
installer unless you specifically need an Intel/Rosetta installation.
2. **Use a fresh release URL and follow redirects.** With `curl`, include
`-L` so the `releases/latest/download/...` link follows the redirect to the
current release asset. With `wget`, keep the quoted URL intact so the shell
does not expand or split it unexpectedly.
3. **Retry through a stable network path.** Interrupted downloads can produce
a shell script or executable that exists locally but fails immediately. If
you are behind a proxy, VPN, or corporate TLS inspection, configure those
settings for `curl`, `wget`, or your browser and then download the installer
again.
4. **Check the file before running it.** A Unix installer should be a shell
script for the expected architecture, and a Windows installer should be the
`.exe` from the Miniforge release. If GitHub provides checksum files for the
release you are using, compare the local checksum with that published value
before rerunning an installer that failed unexpectedly.
5. **Remember that batch installs do not initialize your shell.** After
`bash Miniforge3.sh -b`, either source
`"${PREFIX}/etc/profile.d/conda.sh"` in the current shell or run
`"${PREFIX}/bin/conda" init` and then open a new terminal. Replace
`${PREFIX}` with the directory passed to `-p`, or with the default install
location if no prefix was supplied.
6. **Do not add the whole installation to `PATH` unless you need to.** On
Windows, prefer the Miniforge Prompt or add only the `condabin` directory as
described above. On Unix-like systems, use `conda init` or source the shell
hook instead of prepending every Miniforge binary directory manually.
