Hi, I'm Matt Droter πŸ‘‹

I build autonomous systems β€” machines and software that make good decisions on their own, without a human watching every step. I'm a program/product manager with deep hands-on range (not a career software engineer): I bridge research, software, and real-world deployment.

I've spent years making physical autonomous systems work. Now I'm focused on the same question for AI agents: how do you get them to act reliably, remember truthfully, and govern shared resources without collapsing into chaos?

πŸ€– Now: AI agents & autonomous governance

  • ao-lens β€” an agent-native security/semantic analyzer for AO/Lua development.
  • ao-mcp-server β€” an MCP server for AO/Arweave (query processes, send messages, spawn processes, run Lua).
  • Governance experiment β€” a controlled study on multi-agent commons dilemmas: giving LLM agents the pre-computed answer (not more information, not moral prompts) is what prevents collapse. Small/preliminary, but a clean result β€” write-up + data in vivarium-lab.
  • Thinking a lot about audit trails & decision-provenance for autonomous agents (e.g. EU AI Act Article 12).

🚜 Where I come from: robotics

Founder of ROS Agriculture (2016) β€” an open-source ecosystem to empower farmers with robotic tools (~30 repos, 86 followers).

Farming robots

A few pieces of that work:

  • lawn_tractor β€” software for a self-driving lawn tractor. ⭐ 91
  • tractor_localization β€” GPS + IMU robot localization. ⭐ 53
  • microtrac β€” for Open Source Ecology's open-hardware tractor.

Before that: Program Manager for GUSS (the world's first autonomous orchard sprayer, from inception to first prototype), Robotics Engineer at Diamond Age (Fanuc arms for robotic home construction), and β€” back in 1996 β€” Principal Investigator on a NASA STS-77 experiment: a self-contained autonomous payload that grew slime mold in orbit. That's where the autonomy bug bit.

🧭 The through-line

From slime-mold collectives in space β†’ autonomous vehicles β†’ farm robots β†’ AI agent societies, it's always the same question: how do you get a system to act well on its own?

Most repos on this personal account are forks I've collected β€” my original work lives in ROS Agriculture and a few repos under Credentum.
