# Issue #1390: Pagination Implementation for getAllExperiments()

## Overview
Successfully implemented pagination for the `getAllExperiments()` endpoint in the A/B Testing module to prevent unbounded queries and memory issues as the experiment list grows.

## Problem Statement
The original `getAllExperiments()` method:
- ❌ Loaded **every** experiment without pagination
- ❌ Eagerly loaded all `variants` and `metrics` relations (N+1 risk, unbounded memory)
- ❌ No total count or metadata returned
- ❌ No parameter validation for sorting

## Solution Implemented

### 1. Service Layer Changes (`ab-testing.service.ts`)

#### Added Imports
```typescript
import { PaginationQueryDto } from '../common/dto/pagination.dto';
import { OffsetPaginatedResponse } from '../common/interfaces/pagination.interface';
import { buildOffsetResponse, clampLimit } from '../common/utils/pagination.utils';
```

#### Updated `getAllExperiments()` Method
**Before:**
```typescript
async getAllExperiments(): Promise<Experiment[]> {
return await this.experimentRepository.find({
relations: ['variants', 'metrics'],
order: { createdAt: 'DESC' },
});
}
```

**After:**
```typescript
async getAllExperiments(
query?: PaginationQueryDto,
): Promise<OffsetPaginatedResponse<Experiment>> {
const page = query?.page ?? 1;
const limit = clampLimit(query?.limit);
const sortBy = query?.sortBy ?? 'createdAt';
const order = query?.order ?? 'DESC';
// Validate sortBy to prevent SQL injection
const allowedSortFields = ['createdAt', 'updatedAt', 'name', 'status', 'startDate'];
if (!allowedSortFields.includes(sortBy)) {
throw new BadRequestException(
`Invalid sort field. Allowed fields: ${allowedSortFields.join(', ')}`,
);
}
const queryBuilder = this.experimentRepository.createQueryBuilder('experiment');
// Apply sorting and pagination
queryBuilder
.orderBy(`experiment.${sortBy}`, order as 'ASC' | 'DESC')
.skip((page - 1) * limit)
.take(limit);
// Fetch experiments and total count
const [experiments, total] = await queryBuilder.getManyAndCount();
return buildOffsetResponse(experiments, total, page, limit);
}
```

**Key Improvements:**
- ✅ Accepts `PaginationQueryDto` for flexible pagination parameters
- ✅ Uses `createQueryBuilder()` for optimized query building
- ✅ `findAndCount()` equivalent via `getManyAndCount()` for single DB round-trip
- ✅ Validates `sortBy` against whitelist to prevent SQL injection
- ✅ Removes eager loading of variants/metrics to prevent N+1 queries
- ✅ Returns bounded payload with metadata (total, page, hasNextPage, etc.)
- ✅ Default page size: 10, Max page size: 100 (from `APP_CONSTANTS`)

### 2. Database Query Optimization

#### Removed Unbounded Relations
- **List endpoint** (`getAllExperiments`): No eager loading of variants/metrics
- Reduces memory footprint per request from O(n) relations to O(1) per experiment
- Prevents N+1 problem

- **Detail endpoint** (`getExperimentById`): Maintains full relations for completeness
- Still loads `variants`, `metrics`, and `variants.metrics`
- Used when complete experiment data is needed (dashboard, analysis)

#### Query Pattern
```typescript
// List: Fast, bounded, minimal data
SELECT * FROM experiments
ORDER BY createdAt DESC
SKIP (page - 1) * limit
TAKE limit;
// Detail: Complete, with all relations loaded
SELECT * FROM experiments
LEFT JOIN variants ON experiments.id = variants.experimentId
LEFT JOIN metrics ON experiments.id = metrics.experimentId
WHERE experiments.id = :id;
```

### 3. Controller Layer Changes (`ab-testing.controller.ts`)

#### Added Imports
```typescript
import { PaginationQueryDto } from '../common/dto/pagination.dto';
import { OffsetPaginatedResponse } from '../common/interfaces/pagination.interface';
import { Experiment } from './entities/experiment.entity';
```

#### Updated Endpoint
**Before:**
```typescript
@Get('experiments')
@Roles(UserRole.ADMIN, UserRole.TEACHER)
@ApiOperation({ summary: 'List all experiments' })
@ApiResponse({ status: 200, description: 'List of experiments' })
async getAllExperiments(): Promise<any> {
this.logger.log('Fetching all experiments');
return await this.abTestingService.getAllExperiments();
}
```

**After:**
```typescript
@Get('experiments')
@Roles(UserRole.ADMIN, UserRole.TEACHER)
@ApiOperation({ summary: 'List all experiments with pagination' })
@ApiQuery({
name: 'page',
required: false,
type: Number,
description: 'Page number (1-based)',
example: 1,
})
@ApiQuery({
name: 'limit',
required: false,
type: Number,
description: 'Items per page (default: 10, max: 100)',
example: 10,
})
@ApiQuery({
name: 'sortBy',
required: false,
type: String,
description: 'Field to sort by (createdAt, updatedAt, name, status, startDate)',
example: 'createdAt',
})
@ApiQuery({
name: 'order',
required: false,
type: String,
enum: ['ASC', 'DESC'],
description: 'Sort order',
example: 'DESC',
})
@ApiResponse({
status: 200,
description: 'Paginated list of experiments',
schema: {
example: {
data: [
{
id: 'exp-1',
name: 'Homepage Button Test',
status: 'running',
createdAt: '2025-01-15T10:00:00Z',
},
],
total: 45,
page: 1,
limit: 10,
totalPages: 5,
hasNextPage: true,
hasPrevPage: false,
},
},
})
async getAllExperiments(
@Query() query?: PaginationQueryDto,
): Promise<OffsetPaginatedResponse<Experiment>> {
this.logger.log('Fetching all experiments with pagination');
return await this.abTestingService.getAllExperiments(query);
}
```

**Key Improvements:**
- ✅ Comprehensive Swagger documentation with all query parameters
- ✅ Example response schema showing paginated structure
- ✅ Parameter validation via `PaginationQueryDto` class validator
- ✅ Proper return type annotation

### 4. Response Format

Requests now return:
```json
{
"data": [
{
"id": "exp-1",
"name": "Experiment Name",
"status": "running",
"createdAt": "2025-01-15T10:00:00Z",
...
}
],
"total": 150,
"page": 1,
"limit": 10,
"totalPages": 15,
"hasNextPage": true,
"hasPrevPage": false
}
```

### 5. Comprehensive Test Coverage (`ab-testing.service.spec.ts`)

Added 8 new test cases for pagination logic:

1. **Default Pagination**: Verifies default page/limit behavior
2. **Skip/Take Calculation**: Confirms correct offset math
3. **Sorting Support**: Tests custom sort fields and orders
4. **SQL Injection Prevention**: Validates sortBy whitelist enforcement
5. **Pagination Metadata**: Checks total, totalPages, hasNextPage calculations
6. **No Eager Loading**: Confirms relations are NOT loaded in list view
7. **Page Size Clamping**: Verifies MAX_PAGE_SIZE enforcement
8. **Last Page Handling**: Tests last page edge cases

**Example Test:**
```typescript
it('should return default paginated response when no query params provided', async () => {
// Mocks setup...
const result = await service.getAllExperiments();
expect(result.data).toHaveLength(10);
expect(result.total).toBe(25);
expect(result.page).toBe(1);
expect(result.limit).toBe(10);
expect(result.totalPages).toBe(3);
expect(result.hasNextPage).toBe(true);
expect(result.hasPrevPage).toBe(false);
});
```

## API Usage Examples

### Default Pagination (First 10 experiments)
```bash
GET /ab-testing/experiments
```

Response: First 10 experiments, total count, pagination metadata

### Custom Page Size
```bash
GET /ab-testing/experiments?page=2&limit=20
```

Response: 20 experiments starting at offset 20 (page 2)

### Sort by Name
```bash
GET /ab-testing/experiments?sortBy=name&order=ASC
```

Response: Experiments sorted alphabetically

### Sort by Status
```bash
GET /ab-testing/experiments?sortBy=status&order=DESC
```

Response: Experiments sorted by status (most recent first)

## Performance Impact

### Before
- **Query Type**: Full table scan with eager relations
- **Memory**: O(n) where n = total experiments × (variants + metrics)
- **Response Time**: O(n) - scales with total experiments
- **Payload Size**: Unbounded

### After
- **Query Type**: Indexed scan with LIMIT/OFFSET
- **Memory**: O(limit) - bounded by page size
- **Response Time**: O(1) - constant regardless of total experiments
- **Payload Size**: Bounded at 100 items max

**Example**: 100,000 experiments × 10 variants × 5 metrics
- Before: ~500 MB response, slow
- After: ~100 KB response, fast (default page size)

## Migration Guide

### For API Consumers
If you're calling `/ab-testing/experiments` directly:

**Old Response:**
```typescript
// Array of experiments
const experiments: Experiment[] = await fetch('/ab-testing/experiments');
```

**New Response:**
```typescript
// Paginated response
interface PaginatedResponse<T> {
data: T[];
total: number;
page: number;
limit: number;
totalPages: number;
hasNextPage: boolean;
hasPrevPage: boolean;
}
const response = await fetch('/ab-testing/experiments');
const experiments = response.data; // Access experiments here
```

### For Iteration
```typescript
// Old: Array methods
allExperiments.forEach(exp => {});
// New: Via pagination
for (let page = 1; page <= response.totalPages; page++) {
const { data } = await fetch(`/ab-testing/experiments?page=${page}`);
data.forEach(exp => {});
}
```
