Description of the proposed changes

Undoing revert in #7205.
The specific reasoning for the current changes can be found in the commit history of #7164.

This time it will be force pushed to fafbeta for testing before merging, so that we don't have to revert untested changes.
I'll post any updates down below as changes are made.
